9th Asian Regional Conference and 75th International Council Meeting of International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage

Representatives of the National Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in the Republic of Tajikistan (NCID Tajikistan) participated in the 9th Asian Regional Conference and the 75th International Council Meeting of International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID), held from September 1 to 7, 2024, in Sydney, Australia. More than 500 delegates attended the events, which included an exhibition showcasing the latest technologies in irrigation, drainage, and energy-efficient pumping stations from local and international companies.

Key outcomes

The participation of NCID Tajikistan representatives in the 9th Asian Regional Conference and the 75th International Council Meeting in Sydney successfully achieved three main objectives:

Presentation of the Final Document: NCID Tajikistan representatives successfully presented the final document of the 14th International Drainage Workshop titled “Modernization of Irrigation and Drainage Systems to Adapt to Climate Change and for Sustainable Development.” This workshop took place from May 30 to June 1 in Dushanbe as part of the implementation of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” (2018–2028) and the Dushanbe Water Process.

The presentation was delivered at various ICID meetings and working groups. It received high recognition, particularly during the session “Governance 4: Operational & Implementation Policy” and the Asian Regional Working Group session, where it was presented by Bahrom Gaforzoda and Sharif Makhmudov. The shared experience and key findings of the workshop proved valuable for participants planning similar events under ICID’s auspices.

Participation in the 75th International Council Meeting of ICID: NCID Tajikistan’s active engagement in ICID activities was highly commended during the 75th International Council Meeting. Elections for three ICID Vice-President positions were also conducted at this meeting. As a result of the voting, Dr. Bahrom Gaforzoda’s candidacy was successfully supported by ICID members, appointing him as Vice-President of ICID for the 2024–2027 term.

This appointment strengthened Tajikistan’s status in the international arena and ensured further promotion of the country’s interests within ICID.

Expansion of Cooperation with Technology Providers: Participation in the exhibition facilitated expanded collaboration with various manufacturers of modern energy-saving and water-saving technologies for irrigation and drainage. The participation of NCID Tajikistan representatives in these events contributed to strengthening cooperation with ICID national committees, promoting scientific and practical initiatives, and enhancing the role of NCID Tajikistan in ICID activities.
