From November 2 to 8 in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh, India, the 25th International Congress on Irrigation and Drainage is being held on the theme: “Tackling water scarcity in agriculture” as well as the 74th International Executive Council of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage. Representatives from about 90 countries are participating in this event. They will discuss important issues related to irrigation, drainage, efficient and rational use of water resources in agriculture.
The Republic of Tajikistan at this meeting is represented by the Deputy Director of the Agency for Land Reclamation and Irrigation under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Bakhrullo Zukhurzoda, representatives of the Secretariat of the National Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in the Republic of Tajikistan, and also a representative of the OSCE Program Office in Dushanbe.
It should be noted that the National Commission on Irrigation and Drainage of Tajikistan was established by Decree of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan dated October 29, 2016, No. 620. The main objectives of the commission is to represent the Republic of Tajikistan at the events of the International Commission, as well as to effectively assist in the implementation of a unified state water policy aimed at developing the land reclamation and irrigation sector, as well as preventing and reducing the risks of water-related natural disasters in the context of climate change.
The National Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in the Republic of Tajikistan actively participates in the activities of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage and has been its active member since 2014.
The Secretary of the National Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Bahrom Gaforzoda, noted that within the framework of this event, will be discussed the holding of the 14th International Drainage Workshop on the topic: “Modernization of irrigation and drainage to adapt to climate change and for sustainable development”. The above-mentioned event is planned for the first time in Tajikistan in the city of Dushanbe from May 30 to June 1, 2024.
The upcoming international event will be an important step to modernize the outdated infrastructure of the reclamation and irrigation sector, to achieve the country’s strategic goals, including ensuring food security and employment in rural regions of the country under the influence of climate change for sustainable development.
This event is planned to attract more than 200 highly qualified specialists of irrigation and drainage sector from more than 50 countries, as well as members of the International Commission. The event will serve as a platform for the exchange of experience within the framework of implemented projects to modernize irrigation and drainage infrastructure at the national and regional level, as well as the presentation of the results of innovative solutions in this direction implemented in other developed and developing countries.
This event will be held with the support of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and international development partners.
It should be noted that the Republic of Tajikistan, as the initiator of several global water and climate initiatives, attaches great importance to the modernization of irrigation and drainage systems and reducing the risks of water-related natural disasters to achieve the country’s sustainable development goals.
